How do I know if my project qualifies as a 'custom project' versus a standard remodel?

If your project involves changes to layout, structure, or systems, moving walls, adding square footage, combining spaces, it's a custom project. Standard remodels swap out fixtures and finishes within the existing footprint. Custom work requires detailed scoping, possible structural engineering, and permits from the City of Minnesota. We assess this during your free consultation so there are no surprises.

Do custom home renovations in Minnesota require permits, and who handles them?

Yes. In Minnesota and across Minnesota, permits are required for structural changes, new electrical circuits, plumbing rough-in, HVAC modifications, and any home additions. TWS Remodeling pulls the required permits as part of the project, we don't ask homeowners to handle that themselves. Unpermitted work can void your homeowner's insurance and create serious complications when you sell.

How long does a custom home renovation project typically take from start to finish?

It depends heavily on scope. A custom bathroom renovation runs 2–4 weeks once materials arrive. A full kitchen remodel with layout changes typically takes 4–8 weeks. Home additions or multi-room projects can run 3–6 months depending on structural complexity and permit timelines. We give you a realistic schedule before work begins, not an optimistic number we can't hit.

What happens if unexpected structural issues are found during a custom renovation?

Older Twin Cities homes frequently turn up surprises: outdated wiring, water damage behind walls, undersized structural members. If we find something during demo, we stop, show you exactly what we found, and discuss your options before proceeding. We don't make decisions on your behalf when unexpected conditions change the scope. You stay in control of the project and the budget.

Can TWS Remodeling handle a project that involves multiple trades, framing, electrical, plumbing, and finish work?

Yes, and this is where full-service design-build matters most. We coordinate every trade on your custom project under one contract. You're not hiring a general contractor to manage three subs you've never met. Our operations team, led by Julian Carvajal, keeps scheduling and sequencing on track so trades aren't waiting on each other and your project doesn't drag.

What 'Custom Projects' Actually Means at TWS Remodeling

Most remodelers want a simple job they can quote in five minutes. We don't work that way. Custom projects at TWS Remodeling means we scope the work around your home, not around a pre-packaged template. Need a kitchen that flows into a new home addition? We handle it. Want a lower level finished with a custom wet bar and a bathroom that didn't exist before? That's our wheelhouse. Our Director of Interior Design, Angie Pederson, and Operations Manager Julian Carvajal work together to make sure the design and the execution stay aligned from day one. We won't hand your project off to a subcontractor and disappear. The crew you meet is the crew that builds.

How a Custom Renovation Project Works, From First Call to Final Walkthrough

Here's how we actually run a custom project, start to finish: - You call or submit the form. An expert from our design team schedules a FREE in-home consultation, no pressure, no sales gimmicks. - We assess the space. Structural conditions, existing systems, and your priorities all get factored in before a number is on the table. - You get a transparent proposal. Line items, not vague estimates. You'll know what you're getting and why. - Our crew starts work on the agreed schedule. Julian's team keeps you updated at every stage, no radio silence between demo and finish. - We do a final walkthrough together. If something isn't right, we fix it. That's not a promise, it's just how we've stayed in business for 25 years.

Custom Projects We Build in Minnesota and the Twin Cities

We cover the full range of home renovation in Minnesota and across the metro. Some of the custom project types we build most often: kitchen remodels with custom cabinetry and layout changes, bathroom renovations including special-order fixtures and tile work, finished lower levels and basement conversions, home additions, whether that's a sunroom, a master suite, or a full second-story addition, plus deck installation and exterior upgrades. Honestly, the best projects we've built are the ones that didn't have a name when the homeowner called. Tell us what you're trying to accomplish. We'll figure out how to get there.

What Minnesota Homeowners Say About TWS Remodeling

Over 1,035 Google reviews at a 4.5-star rating. Here's what a few homeowners said in their own words: "Our bathroom was 30 years old. We replaced the vanity, put in new lights, a new toilet, a new floor, and a new special order shower that was a foot deeper... The difference is like night and day." "From start to finish, our kitchen cabinet reface with custom inserts project went smoothly. The salesman that came was thorough and listened to all of our needs." "Timely, professional service, and a great product. The team did an amazing job maintaining the character of our 120 year old house while modernizing at the same time." "Great service from start to finish. Kept us informed as to the progress. Installer did a great job!" That last one matters. Keeping you informed isn't something we do when we remember, it's how we run every project.

5 Things That Separate a Good Custom Renovation From a Bad One

After 25 years in the trade, here's what actually makes the difference on a custom project: - Detailed scoping before a single wall comes down. Surprises during demo kill budgets and timelines. - Materials that match the rest of your home, not whatever was cheapest at the supply house that week. - A crew that communicates. You shouldn't have to wonder what's happening in your own house. - Permits pulled correctly. Minnesota requires permits on structural changes, electrical, and plumbing work, and skipping them creates real problems at resale. - A contractor who'll tell you when something isn't the right call. We won't upsell you on a full gut renovation when a targeted upgrade gets you 90% of the result at half the cost.
