Winter Galore with Siding and Doors

The holidays are approaching and as we start getting ready to settle down with a cup of hot cocoa by a cozy fire, we should also take a moment to make sure our homes are going to stay cozy all winter long. We've talked about how our harsh winters can affect our windows and roofing, but what about our often overlooked winter siding woes?

Persistent Moisture

Persistent moisture introduced by snow and ice can cause rot to occur and spread quickly. Left unchecked, it allows moisture into your home and can cause extensive structural damage, both inside and out. Wooden siding is more susceptible to rot than other materials, but it isn't the only type at risk. Heavy snow can also cause the lamination on some wooden siding to wear off over time.

Similar to wooden siding, wooden doors are vulnerable to the same persistent moisture. Rot and moisture damage in doors can invite termites inside, compounding a manageable problem into something much more serious. Because moisture doesn't evaporate as quickly in freezing temperatures, condensation becomes an ongoing battle. This ever-present moisture continues to freeze and thaw, which can cause issues with exposed hardware, leading to rust, frozen locks, and creaky hinges. Wooden doors are more prone to shrinking or warping, which can lead to improper latching and misalignment.

Harsh Wind

The harsher winds of winter significantly add to siding woes. The powerful gusts from a blustery snowstorm can loosen or tear off siding and send debris ramming into the side of your home. If your siding is outdated, improperly installed, or already damaged, that leaves your home defenseless against ice, snow, freezing rain, and extreme cold.

Beyond the structural risk, wind-driven moisture works its way into any gap or crack it can find. Small issues that might go unnoticed in warmer months become serious vulnerabilities once temperatures drop. Doors take a beating from wind as well, repeated slamming and pressure changes can stress frames and weatherstripping, reducing the seal your home depends on to stay warm.
